Why I Work

Recently there was a link up that went around called "Why We Work." I honestly couldn't tell you who started it or anything, but the posts were everywhere. Every time I saw a post I thought it meant "Why I have a job instead of laying in bed in my yoga pants watching cat videos on YouTube all day" but it was actually about relationships. Nonetheless, it got my brain going.

I adore pencil skirts. Seriously, it's an obsession. I cannot get enough of them, and if I didn't have a job I wouldn't have a place to wear my ever-growing collection.

I like to pretend I won't be in student loan debt for the rest of my life. I like to entertain the delusion that if I pay my bills every month eventually I will have paid off my education. At least having a job keeps my debt from getting bigger.

I have no self control in the pet aisle. How cute is this mouse toy? Better get it for Elsa. How cute would Elsa be in this sparkly collar? Is Elsa out of treats? No? Well let's get some more.

My coffee mug addiction won't pay for itself. I love coffee mugs, but don't ask me why- it's not like I drink coffee. I currently have my eye on a travel mug from Starbucks, and that shit costs money.

& why don't I own this one?

I genuinely love what I do. I normally try to keep my job title off the internet for confidentiality reasons, but I'll share it this one time. I work as a caseworker with child welfare helping children and families who have fallen victim to abuse and neglect. It makes my heart grow ten sizes every time I see a life changed for the better because of my agency's intervention. I absolutely love working with families, and showing them how to parent in a way that meets the physical and emotional needs of the child when before they had no idea. And every time a kiddo is adopted because their biological parents are unable or unwilling to provide them with a safe and stable home, I feel so much joy knowing that I played a part in giving them opportunities they wouldn't have had in their biological home.

Why do you work?

  1. haha i was confused about this link up too! I thought it was why people work too - but maybe if I was in a relationship I would have viewed it differently!

  2. Your job is probably one of the most rewarding out there. When I worked in childcare, I always thought about going into a similar profession. I think I might end up being a foster parent later in life just because of the kids that I had the chance to work with.

  3. I work so I can live at the beach, that's really about it besides eating.

  4. I bet your job is so rewarding! I too have a pencil skirt addiction but hopefully my job will help pay for all my future travel adventures too!

  5. hahah! Omg I love this! So much better than the why we work posts. I secretly found those kinda boring to read (oops, did I say that.) Holla at reason number 2, for real, though.
